GENDER AND RENEWABLE ENERGY PROGRAMME
Background
Green Network’s decision to prioritize renewable energby issues was done through
the organisation’s intensive consultative processes with its constituents
prior to, and following, their involvement in the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD) during 2002. During these consultations
the Network’s current focal areas were affirmed but in addition a strong
commitment was expressed (especially during the post-WSSD consultations)
to address climate change through an exploration of renewable energy options
at the local level, with a special focus on gender perspectives.
In 2003, two
Renewable Energy (RE) / Energy Efficiency (EE) workshops explored energy
issues and available technology, leading to the creation of an energy
task force. Eventually, with assistance from GEF-SGP, a design workshop
allowed Green Network (GN) to synthesis the analysis into project proposal.

Objectives
Key components of the project are to:-
- Conduct Participatory assessment of energy use patterns by member CBOs and their communities;
- Further an awareness programme consisting of a mobile technology unit and an awareness, demonstration and training workshop package;
- Build Capacity in member CBOs to implement the awareness programme;
- Rotate an awareness programme in 8 communities;
- Further and implement three RE/EE pilot projects, in a rural household, a peri-urban household and a school environment;
- Monitor and Evaluate (M&E) the awareness and technology dissemination components;
- Network, lobby and advocate, and generate support for a comprehensive programme to replicate successful strategies.
What we have done
We have raised the awareness of Renewable Energy Technology, its uses
and resources - read how we have been
championing Renewable Energy.
We have also assembled a Mobile Renewable Energy
Technology Demonstration Unit (RETMDU). This consists of Trailer,
Solar Water Heater, Solar Panel, Convector, battery and globe.
We run participatory workshops on the use of the biogas digester.
A biodigester has been installed at Willowfountain.

What’s next?
- Train trainers in monitoring and maintaining the biogas digester as well as recording the use of gas (and maintaining the record of gas used).
- Conduct Exchange programme with other communities.
- Produce renewable energy facts sheets.
- Host an Energy caucus in KZN.
